There is a backwards message in the first half of the film (this is a technique called "backmasking"). It's a woman repeating the phrase "Only fools are enslaved by time and space".

I think these flash backs, the memories, they are either triggered by the others, or are somehow observed by the others.
It's all about mind reading. Desmond is seeing stuff, but in the future. Maybe that's what the Others are trying to do, see the future, not just the past.

The only thing preventing somebody from manifesting things are time and space. If you will it, it takes time for the space to arrange itself before it comes into being. If you can overcome this, then you are more able to manifest your will. All things change, and the thought that things are static is an obstacle to manifestation.

i think we have arrived at a major reveal in the show...all lines lead to the point that the island somehow manipulates time/space continuity..and the others have some control over at least some aspects of this..hence their knowledge of the survivors histories, their ability to label them as good-bad...the island being 'hidden' from the world

The 1st thing I thought was that it DID sound like Ms. Klugh. I wrote a theory back a few months about String theory here it is:
"string theory" was something that scientists were "over the moon" about in the 60's and 70's - OK excuse the pun... String theory attempts to further explain the dynamics of Quantum Gravity. String theory makes things like black-holes, time travel or dimensional travel a real possibility. There is the possibility in string theory and the more advanced M theory that other dimensions do exist.
Now for the Hey, I'm just watching a TV show explanation; Maybe the Dharma people were working on things all related to string theory and its relevance to gravity and electromagnetism. Maybe they messed with the electromagnetic field around the earth causing the "incident" and used the Magnet in the hatch keep different dimensions from touching each other (think of the strings on a harp being different dimensions) and during a "system failure" the dimensions do touch each other. Maybe after initially having someone enter the numbers, they had an automatic system and that's why the other's didn't seem to be concerned about the hatch. maybe that system was destroyed when John smashed the computer. way to take an interesting theory and make it sound like it's for retards. dimensional travel? what, are you in high school still? even then, i'd expect high schoolers to have more sense than that statement. string theory posits that the different particles exist as vibrating strings in a many dimensional space, it's just that from our vantage point we can only measure 3 spatial dimensions. see, dimensions aren't some crazy world that's separate from everything like dimension x for the ninja turtles, a dimension is a direction of measurement. if particles do exist in 11 dimensions, that means we exist in 11 dimensions. there's no "traveling" to those other dimensions, we exist in them. also, black holes exist outside of string theory, black holes are anomalies discovered through general relativity. you know, the theory in which space-time derives from? string theory's purpose isn't to "explain the dynamics of quantum gravity" ... there is no quantum gravity, the whole selling point of string theory though is that it produces a massless spin 2 particle that they think is the graviton. string theory attempts to explain why properties of particles are the way that they are and why we can use things like eigenvalues to nicely determine values for every particle.

I think the paralell worlds and time travel stuff makes some sense. Rember the old clipper ship they found rotting in the jungle, that might have been pulled from the past or a paralell universe. I also have a theory that the island can manifest things from people's mind. Example, the polar bear. I think that the island manifested the bear from walt's mind because he was reading a spanish green latern comic with the polar bear in it. Also various people on the island see a loved one or a person they knew in the past that leads them to something important.

I'm going to have to agree that "something funny" is going on with that clip. I don't want to call it BS yet, as I really want it to be true, but the audio has certainly been modified from the original version. I loaded up that scene and played it in reverse and the audio is absolutely NOT as clear as what was posted. So unless the person who extracted and modified that audio can demonstrate what exactly was done to make the backmasked voices so clear, I remain totally skeptical.

I thought the polar bears were from the french womans research ship that crashed. So sick of hearing about them. Also the frenchy caught ben...her daughters dad? Im really starting to lean towards the dimensional theorys. only way to explain character interaction. I tried it and yes you can hear it. Reverse the clip and time expand it to 120%. (so it is slightly slower) And what I find interesting is at the beginning before they open the door, which will be the end after it is reversed, you can hear a voice say "I am Yemi." Very interesting...

Hey, I'm just the messenger, I didn't do the reversal.
I read a post on another site regarding this and then passed the info along to Dark. I did not send the original file I heard, so I can only assume that Dark made his own. The voice is very clear in both the original file and the one Dark posted, so I think the chances of this being a fake are slim.

This is a HUGE clue. Why? Because this is exactly what Walt can do. He wills things into being, and poof! There they are. It even happened this week in the form of Edmund Burke getting hit by the bus. second, one of the things Dharma studies is Zoology and Environment so don't give me that crap about the Polar Bears. About 1:19, it sounds like someone says Karl. On the video it is about the time that Alex is rubbing his face, but I dont think that Alex can be heard when playing the scene the regular way.
My question is how much can a person actually hear and comprehend of a backward taped message? If so this is an excellent way to program people; employers should be regularly herding staff into conference rooms for film presentations, and staff should be doubleplushappy to meet company goals.

This is really creepy cool. As far as it being a subliminal massage in the show, it's been proven ( I believe) that your brain doesn't hear things and turn it around. So backmasking is ineffective as a subliminal motivator. I think the only reason they put it in the show is that it is assocoated with brain washing-which is what was being portrayed on screen. Which is also why I think it would be a waste of time to look thru the rest of the episodes looking for backward messages. They won't be there.

OK...this is to take up the idea of "other dimensional travel." Someone earlier panned this idea and called the original poster a retard, which is A) impolite and indicative of a complete lack of manners, and 2) demonstrating an incomplete understanding of string theory. Strings are not the only possible fundamental object in string theory. There is (theoretically, at least) something called "branes", which are specially extended objects. Unlike fundamental strings, which have only 1 dimension, branes can have more (i.e., a 2-brane is a "membrane"). There are theories that suggest that our universe is, in fact, a brane, and that it is possible for othere branes (other universes) to be separate and distinct from ours. Furthermore, some physicists have posited that the Big Bang might have been the result between the collision of two branes. So, bottom line is, string theory is a little more intricate than just strings. I think it would be entirely appropriate for the person who insulted the original poster to both study this subject a little more and apologize. Danke.
OK...I just posted the "brane" comment, but I forgot to mention this. All theories aside for a second, I just watched this with earphones on in a dark room alone at around 11:00 pm. Jesus Christ...I can't remember ever feeling so creeded out by any movie or TV show. I literally had the hair on my neck standing up, chills up and down my spine, and my eyes started to water like crazy. I started looking over my shoulder, half expecting someone to be there. Holy smack. Backmasking is always freaky, but this was a doozy. No kidding. Watching it with the video (as opposed just to audio) is a little bit better, but not much. If you don't want to be seriously creeped out, do not listen to this.

Is this really a brainwashing technique? Ok, you see a lot of pictures and some loud music (Sounded to me like tuning beats for a car), but does this brainwash you? I would have a tremendous headache after a while, but that's it probably. As far as the Speedo with the odd number 55, that is just a speedometer out of an old US car from when the speed limit was federally restricted to 55 MPH. Almost all US speedo looked like that.
I played it backwards in my Audio Editor & sure as hell the message is there, though very unitelligible & I could ONLY make out since I knew the words beforehand & was looking for them.

awesome. there have been quite a few clues that should lead us to believe there is something going on with wormholes, a time warp, etc. i'm happy because i've had that theory since the end of season 1, early season 2.

6. at the end of one earlier episode, i believe from season 2. it ends w/ Hurley & Sayid on the beach with the radio. they pick up an old 50's song on the radio. Sayid mentioned it could be coming from anywhere, and Hurley jokes yeah "maybe from a different time," but Sayid gives him a serious look like he was contemplating what Hurley said, and then the episode ends.
Yeah, that Hurley comment stuck out like a sore thumb. I had the same thought about the time situation, as akward as that comment was.
Doubting this clip's validity (dark ufo seeming to be a little....odd)..I exported the flv (flash video..what all youtube video's are encoded to) audio from youtube.. Opened in quicktime to convert flv to .wav..opened in adobe audition..reversed the backwards file and for sure. the audio is there. this isent a hack, and totally friggin scary. What is this show about!
On the subject of whether any of the other eps have backwards messages there is at least the parts involving wet Walt (he is speaking backwards and says something like "the button is bad").
See I'm all for speculation (hey, with Lost that's all we have!) but I don't like the time travel thing. It was implied by someone that no-one ever said what year it was in Lost, but
1. Walt has a Gameboy (love that part, "I need batteries". No you don't it's a GBA SP, it uses an integral power-pack :) ), so they started off in the present
2. A research facility with computers noticed the hatch explode, so we're not in the past on the island. (of course, maybe it didn't, we only know they saw SOMETHING, who's to say it was the hatch explosion?)
Maybe the comment by Damon was meant to mean that although they spend months/years on the island, if they left the island it would be, say, 1 day later. And on that I have no contrary comment to make.

What if the others can't have children, I know it sounds strange and their is probably lots of stuff to disporve it or something but...
They take Alex, they take Walt, they take Claire, they steal the children while they sleep. They need the children and also Juliet is taken to the Island and she's a fertility doctor. Just thought I'd throw this in there because no one else seems to have mentioned it (might not be worth mentioning), but did anyone notice how the name of the Mittelos BM recruiter? Alpert? An anagram of that would be T. Pearl. (as in "The Pearl" station). Actually, I got the name "Alpert" off of closed captioning, but the final "t" wasn't strongly emphasized, so it may be (may, must be) "Alper", which IS an anagram of "Pearl." That's the problem with anagrams...once you see one, you think you start seeing them everywhere.

After now watching "Flashes Before Your Eyes" where Desmond "re-lives" his past with knowledge of the future and also after reading on this blog how perhaps parallel dimensions can interlap, it almost makes total sense. After all, he was the one who turned the fail-safe key that kept perhaps the parallel universes from intersecting. He could have been bombarded of whatever it was that was emitted from the hatch implosion, therefore the precognizant abilities...

You need to extract the correct audio channel from the 5:1 sound to get the clear version. The standard stereo does not have a very clear sound.

Penny knows her father is involved with Hanso and the projects they do, we all saw the Hanso Foundation website, or as I like to call it the Has- no foundation! It was laden with time travel and electromagnetic research as well as the longevity stuff.
I think Penny knows that Des is time travelling/ looping, and set up that research post with the portugese/ brazillian guys in to monitor for anomilies, so that she knows where to find him and that he is still travelling. (The Time travellers wife references also in here) That way she can get back to him because we all now true love conquers all through time, space and beyond........
Did anyone notice that from the beggining of the backwards message to the end of it, Sawyer was really entranced by the video? Maybe he knows something about this or maybe he's just susceptible to brainwashing :)
one thing that everyone is ignoring with the black hole / string theory /quantum mechanics discussion is that even if these theories are true, physical matter (people, boats, islands, etc) can't conceivably travel from one dimensional universe to another or jump through a black hole. physical matter is torn to bits by the forces at work involving these anomalies. so even if black holes lead to another dimension, the matter that makes up human beings has to be atomized to get there...and thusly you won't really be able to tell you're in a new dimension because your brain and body have been torn apart and turned into elementary particles. if lost starts to go in the direction of time travel, i'll be seriously disappointed.
I too understand the mechanics of physics but I think you may be following it to far. Don't forget that this is a TV show. For instance, the Star Trek series would telport people from one location to another. We know that is not possible with our current technology. Maybe in the future someone will come up with a way to pull this off. I feel within Lost it is a possibilty that someone could have figured out how to manipulate timespace beneficially. Again, this is a TV show, not reality.

Not a black hole. I black hole uses gravity to pull things in. Magnetism and gravity are two separate forces.
LOVE the parallel universe - time warp theories. Just a question as to how all the relationships would fit in to this. Everyone is connected somehow, as we are learning from their "back-stories" and it's almost like they have all been set-up to end up at this "place" (the Island). So do you think the Others somehow jumped over and picked out all of these people - and how did they all end up on the same plane? Lots of questions!! ;-)
i don't know if this had been mentioned already, but to tie the voice back to klugh: in the episode where michael was reunited with walt, walt mentions that they make him take tests and klugh says something like "you don't want to go back to the room". could it be room 23 she is refering to?
did anyone else catch that?

with the whole-where are they in time and space- think about the fact that desmond sailed around on his boat for a few weeks once the losties took over his hatch duties. he said that after sailing for so long he spotted land-but it was only the island. some force is not letting his boat leave the island area. also, i think it was juliette who told ben to let the losties keep the boat because it would just keep them wasting time. this shows that there is no way to escape this strange continum (unless you are walt and michael apparently?)
that is wierd! oh and on the whole Desmond time travel thing... that reminded me of the old show Quantum Leap.
Iam just as into LOST as many of you. That being said; when we record anything, an episode of LOST for example, we are saving a little piece of time and space. Are we not?.......hmmmm and so I am not so "Anonymous" you call me "D2" -
God knows what is going on. It would appear however, that Desmond is now a "Quantum Functioning Object" He couldn't sail away because as he said himself, they're "stuck in a bloody snowglobe."

The "they're all dead" theory has long ego been debunks by Cuse and Lindoff. And if you watch the show, it would be obvious that this theory is dead. Red Sox video, communication with outside world, Penny/Antarctic Brazilians, Desmond Flashback... should I continue?
Knowing what we know now.. we know that they used the beacon to get BACK to the island, but the hatch implosion sent out a emp that took out the communications and the beacon.. so they're 'stuck'.
Realistially, the Others are in a battle/struggle.. they are on the island for a purpose.. and have been for a long time.. they at least believe that they are the good guys, and are quite possibly saving the world from something very bad. What is this? Some unknown participant? The island/smokey? Could it be that Locke is now under the influence of the Island? He blew up the flame, and will try to blow up the others sub... but how would he know? His dream visions/communication with the island? Could Locke be an agent of what the Others are guarding the world from?
Or could they be guarding the world from some time anomoly? Perhaps the island itself is outside of actual time.. despite the numbers on the printout that Desmond was looking through. It's obvious that Dharma can still make food drops, but why.. we believe that the others have taken over the dharma facilities... and we know that the others are having trouble reproducing.. possibly due to aging. Is it possible that Dhamra had set off, or made things in a greater danger than they were previously and the Others are trying to bring things back in line?
I believe that the 'island' and it's visions are what is bad. It healed Rose and John, but not Ben because Ben is an enemy of the 'island'. John is willing to do it's bidding since episode 3 of season 1. He looked into the island/smokey and saw something beautiful, he has faith in the "island" which is bad. You cannot be flawed if you are to resist the Island(it tempts you as a 'satan' type character, and will Kill you (smokey) if it pleases. Does this make sense? A lot more than purgatory! But I'm stuck on the time, unless time is a linear block... that is predestined... and perhaps some people can remove themselves from the active time and look at the entire timeline from 'outside'.. sort of like browsing chapters on a DVD. Desmond has this ability, but can't control it, it comes when it wants to. The old lady from the Desmond flashback has more control. She knew what would happen when Desmond walked in, and when he tried to change it, she knew he had the power too.
OK. that's a ramble.. hope it helps someone to an idea that's useful.

Okay, Lost is suddenly making a LOT more sense to me. The thought of time was always something I wondered about, but as I'm reading through all of this and seeing all of these easter eggs, I'm pretty certain there is something screwed up with the time on the island.
A time-space thing, definitly. It would explain a lot of the newer things (The VW, for instance), and the older things (Adam and Eve skeletons)
I think we need to search for an anagram of "Only fools are enslaved by time and space". Obviously one can make the words "Adam and Eve" from the letters of that sentence. Can anyone figure out the rest?
