nice catch. Interesting.
He did. Go back 20 secs from that screen shot and you can see he has 2 pieces of paper in his hand. This one we see is the one that was between his middle fingers all the time and never moved. I have no idea why they would film it that way though??
probably just a mistake
I don't see any reason why he wouldn't want off the island, except for maybe being worried about death or Claire losing interest.
I don't think it matters if he palmed it or not. Securing an SOS message to a migratory seabird with what appears to be a toothpick isn't exactly going to work now is it?
Yes, I'm having a cynical day. XD
It looked like a twist-tie to me, not a toothpick. Notice how it bends... I could be wrong though.
No i posted this on another web site on Thursday and it is the note. It is not a production error. I believe Charlie is too scared of the chance of a rescue because Desmond has told him he will die. If they got rescued will Desmond stick by Charlie every day and change his destiny? Doubt it. 'Course-Correcting' that old lady says...Charlie will certainly die if Desmond isnt around.

Wow...if Charlie is still holding the note, you think they would have made that more obvious to the viewers....the vewiers like me who would never have seen that! x.x
I think it's probably just a goof. Wouldn't she have noticed if it wasn't attached?
Noone seems to remember the BIG revelation of the episode and that is that jack and claire are half brother and sister! I was SOOOOOOOOOO shocked by that. Lost is getting really intresting now, but i know im going to be disappointed at some point because i now expect a big revelation in every episode and i know that wont happen in every one
I saw it. Just after Charlie attaches the note to the bird, he touches it and Claire releases it. As he reaches out, you can see a folded note in the palm of his hand. I think that the production values are too high for it to be a continuity error and that our Charlie is up to something. But the chances of that note being found and read are slim. Even if it doesn't fall off, seabirds have a habit of getting their feet wet and I doubt the note will legible even if it did make it off the island.
Vix
I know its a migratory bird, but I had always thought that birds don't fly to far over the ocean - Sailors would always know if land was nearby if they saw birds..right?

Are you kidding? Most people knew since season two when Christian goes to see his illegitimate daugher in Australia. At that point she was not shown onscreen but it was pretty obvious...
I think Domonic forgot his lines because he had drank too much hobbit juice that day, the paper are his lines wot he reads out loud.
LOL
I think it's a continuity error...just like the bit where he folds the note twice. Oops.
yep... the bird lands on water 1 time and their written message on a piece of paper is ruined. seriously! lame.
Michelle ha detto...

that's true..seagulls don't fly long distances..they're always in harbors etc..near the coast line..definately not far away in the sea. so i guess their little island is located very close to australian coast.
I think he's afraid that if they are rescued he will loose Claire and maybe he will end up in his old, drugged up life again.
Desmond might have told Charlie that something terrible would happen if Claire sent the note, if you look at where Desmond and Charlie are talking earlier in the distance, Desmond is making a lot of hand movements...

Really? Nobody else (who saw Two For the Road) was.
Isn't it quite possible that he did a switch-a-roo? You know, he wrote some kind of secret note, read Claire's note aloud, and then attached his note to the bird and palmed Claire's note? This all goes back to my thought - Charlie was compromised a long time ago.
man, i never catch anything like this...
The animals on the island are Dharma related so I suppose the sea gulls too.
Who cares - if that bird lands in water, as seagulls tend to, the message is screwed anyway.
I think that they didnt expect you to catch it. They wanted you to think that they did put it on the bird. But the reason they didn't was to not hurt the bird.

What I don't understand is why didn't Desmond let Claire and Jin catch the bird in the begginning. If he didn't scare it off, they would have captured it, put the message on. Then Charlie would have never tried to get the bird for Claire, then die?? Am I right, or am I right?
maybe des thought that he could clear off all the birds or that claire would give up, thus negating the whole charlie going after the bird-ness.
hey darl i just want to pass this along from the abc boards about this
After seemingly attaching Claire's note to the gull, part of the note can be seen tucked in Charlie's hand. This is a confirmed blooper by the producers
Although some speculated that Charlie had secretly not attached the note to the captured seagull based on it being visibly tucked in Dom Monaghan's hand, ABC's online summary later confirmed that Charlie was meant to have attached the note based on it saying, "They attach it to the bird and release it, " therefore what the audience saw was an error.

I had asked Dark UFO to find this screencap via the abc message boards. I noticed it right away when I watched the episode and had to rewind a few times to confirm what I saw. Charlie's motives? I'm not sure on that one. Many of us have thought that there is something sinister about Charlie - before and after the explosion. What happened to him when Desmond turned the key?
The paper would not have survived the bird flight, I am sure.
I do not think this was a production error, but then again I have watched multi-million dollar blockbusters that have microphone booms appear onscreen. It is so telling that I could see something so small and instantly become suspicious. This is what this show does to us! Question everything.
