Thanks to Andre for the Graphic and thanks to J for the following info about the Newspaper.
The newspaper that the obituary is removed from has an article on the front cover.
The article reads:
Residents Speak.....
Proposed Coastal...
That is an issue of the La times from April 5th of this year. I do not have the original paper, but here is a link the online version for you to peruse.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-lng5apr05,1,7141085.story
Since Jack was flying to and from LA this would make perfect sense he would have that newspaper, and the date would indicate that the time is the present if it is an easter egg and not a mistake.
So flashforward!
Thanks,
J

The timeline does make sense in that case - that would put it what, 5 1/2 years after crashing on the island, right? Or 3 1/2? For some reason I can't remember if they crashed on 9/22/01 or 9/22/03.
9/22/04
nice catch.
very nice catch indeed.
Yeah, they're definitely in LA, as when Kate pulled up she had a California license plate on the front of the car, (Volvo I think) she was driving.
Sorry, how did you know it was the LA Times, why did you give us a copy of that newspaper...I'm missing the "great" catch
Sorry, little slow today
April 5, 2005? That would be 11th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death. Jack was listening to Nirvana on the way to a funeral. Weird coincidence indeed.
nice catch, the radio station was probably playing nirvana tribute, another reference to the date
I just had the idea, to take the number of the french womans calls.
Do the math equation, and figgure out how long they have been on the island(when they turned it off)
(or mabey the told is a recent episode how long they were there)
And find out if the dates match, and how different they are.
also guys, we know it's the present cause he was using a motorola KRZR phone that was very prominent - it was released only a few months ago
I believe Kate's Volvo (and I am going from memory here) had 4-series CA plates. The 4-series ended in late 2002 (only know this b/c wife's Honda is a 2002, bought in early 03 and has early 5-series plates).
Doesn't mean much as it could be production error or not a brand new car. Kate could have bought a used car. :)
I think the issue of who is in the casket is over shadowing some of the bigger issues of what happened in the episode and in the season.
We know this is a flash forward, people who are confused by Jack mentioning his dad are giving a lot of credit to someone who is addictd to oxy cotons and being confronted with it. I think he was just bringing up his dad as a drunk as an excuse for his actions.
Jack said to Kate something to the extent of "I'm tired of the lying", can we assume that they were rescued and told not to talk about what happened on the island. Is this death one of many deaths that happened after they all got off? Maybe there is a large cover up going on by DHARMA.
Is anybody else surprised that they ended season 2 with the Penny's boat and then we didn't see it again for the entire season?
Why did Locke give up so easily when Jack was going to use the phone? If the consequences were so large, wouldn't Locke shoot Jack for the islands sake?
And finally a random note, great tie in from the last episode of season 1, Sawyer telling "Zeke" that he is going to kill him one day. I thought that was a great moment, even though Tom was becoming a likable character.
Maybe Saywer telling Tom he was going to kill him wasn't from season 1, I forget, Im sure someone can tell me when that was.

Plane crash 9/22/04. Been on Island 91-95 days? Should be just about 12/25/04 give or take. If date of article insinuating a date of April 5, 07 is not a production gaff then that would be abut 2 years ad 4 months from last night's show.

which would coincide perfectly with the last few seasons of the show...taking us to present day acitivites (but for us by then it'd be the past)
elaine if your calculations are correct then this may be why we were told that after last nights episode we would know why the show could only last 48 more episodes/3 more seasons. that means we will be told what has happened in th 2years and 4 months and maybe what happens after last nights jake & kate meeting.
Also, in the Answers Episode before the Season Finale, the directors mentioned that we've seen Flash"backs" of the Past, Present, and Future**
I think that's an indication that it's a Flashforward... straight from the horse's mouth...
Jack says he gets on a plane every Friday and flies overseas, has a drink and flies back. April 5/07 was a Thursday. Why would there still be a two or three day old copy of the LA Times on the plane? I think it's more likely that this was around the day the scene was shot.
Jack could also take off very early Friday morning and come back Friday. Having a day old paper is not uncommon. Besides it looked like the stewardess was going to throw it away anyway. So it would make more sense if it were a day old.
BTW, great find OP.
This just came to me. Say that the castaways do get rescued, what if lost turns into trying to get back to the island? Would that be plausible?
Could it be that they don't actually get off the island until after season 4. Could the Tsunami on 12/26/2004 still play a role? Possibly causing problems with the rescue ship?
FYI the article that appears next to the obit (as referenced by "J") is both the most viewed and the most e-mailed article on the LA Times website today. And ABC was worried about a drop off in viewership!
Ummmm, if this was a real newspaper article has anyone checked to see if the obituary is in that paper? I mean it probably isn't but you never know.
That would be interesting to see if the Production crew actually placed this obituary in the LA times on that date. If anyone is keeping up with old papers maybe they could pull this up and actually find out what is said in the paper and who's name is given.
If true then I would have to say well done with the thuroughtness of this show and its writers.
Ha ha ha! I was at that demonstration mentioned in the article. I had an awesome sign and everything.
Uh, no Lost theories - just wanted to mention that because I thought it was funny.
Ok, I went to this electronic database and this article was page B4. The obits from that day were page B9, so it is not an obit.
that is a good point, because obituaries typically don't describe the situation in which someone passed. they are generally just 'so and so passed away on this date and these are his survivors'
someone needs to hit an LA library and search microfilm of the paper on that day.
it wasnt an obit, it was a local news column. it mentioned someone whose last name ends in "tham" from new york being found dead.
This is probably just another coincidence with numbers, but it's intriguing that April 5th was exactly 48 days before the air date of the episode and there are 48 episodes left of the show.
I've looked for the obit article, but could not find it though I've done a bit of research in the last few hours. That one may have been created for the show, or not printed online.
I was also going to ask if someone had a copy of the obituaries from April 5th. Is there any way to see them on the L.A. Times website? That would be ridiculously cool.
I LOVe that this article was most viewed/emailed. The Times must be loving that XD
The L.A. Times has a PDF of the newspaper page in question, on their website for "eagle-eyed -- and scarily obsessive -- fans" of Lost.
http://www.latimes.com/la-spinoff-lost24may24,0,3112143.story?track=mostviewed-storylevel
It seems Jack rips the top left corner of that page - but the paper he has in the plane seems to be different than the PDF the L.A. Times has posted. The picture of the woman speaking (Port Hueneme Mayor Maricela Morales) seems to be different in Jack's paper, and also that photo is up at the top of the page - in the PDF there is another article above it. It seems to me the piece he rips out is from the immediate left of that picture. But it definitely wasn't the article about a "marijuana operation found in another house".
Danielle said...not an obit.
David said...that is a good point, because obituaries typically don't describe the situation in which someone passed.
ray said...it wasnt an obit, it was a local news column
yet people are still looking/asking for the obituaries. *HINT* It's not an obituary, its a local news blurb. Good Luck.
I don't know if I'm thinking about this too much. But if Oceanic 815 crashed on 9/22/04, and if Jack was on a plane on or immediately after 4/5/07 -- that's approximately 925/926/927 days apart, depending on whether Jack saw a newspaper that was one or two days old.
If Jack is flying back from Asia, it's possible it's a couple of days old, which would be approximately 927 days after Oceanic 815 crashed. That's 9+2+7, which is 18, which is also 10+8, or 10-8, or 108...
Is this too much of a stretch?
Hasn't anybody noticed that the paper in LOST and the original don't LOOK the same? They don't have the same picture, but it's still the same article...
And @d: What Penny's boat? You mean Libby's? Don't you remember the second episode of season 3?
Maybe they couldn't get permision to reprint the womens picture in the article above, so they staged another photograph. If you notice the picture of the articles both have women standing at a podium.
Jonelle,
That's really neat! LOL
I still can't believe the dead man is Ben. Why would Jack even care?

Charlie was telling Desmond that the boat Naomi said was 80 kms away isn't Penny's boat.
I'm surprised to see noone else has questioned the photograph(s) in the newspaper article, is it just me, or don't the photos above the text look diff in Jack's copy vs the actual LA Times copy?
Even if you ignore the fact that the production company could have easily altered that page for their own purposes, it's not uncommon for various editions of a big newspaper (eg, the early edition that goes to subscribers, a later edition sent out to news-stands, etc) to have slightly different layouts based on breaking news and such. The pic on the upper left could be an ealier or later news item that the publishers subsequently replaced with something different....
Meant to say "pic on upper RIGHT" (or more correctly, the pic in the middle of the page).
Actually, if you look carefully, the left hand column in Jack's paper doesn't line up with the Gas Plant article in the middle exactly the same way as in the real paper. This, too, could just be a difference between two editions of the paper....
(Sorry about the multiple posts....)
Or... it could be a small easter egg showing that somehow the future has been changed or is different than it was on the april 5th that we experienced?
What is the map of?
there is some kind of map under the photo of the woman at a podium.
could it be something interesting !?
^what kelly said.
The fact that Jack's paper and the actual LA Times paper have some similar and some different stories could be a clue for us that the future may not happen the way it happened for Jack and Kate and that only by going back will they change the future to be as it is in the real LA Times paper.
The map is of an underwater pipeline extending out into the sea, south of Ventura and just east of Santa Cruz Island. It kind of reminds me of the Looking Glass, with the cable extending out to it.

I think this show, all the blogs about it, etc. are setup inside my mind... none of you are real.
That is why the date on that paper is my birthday. My 27th birthday to be exact.
It co-incides with the death of Kurt Cobain (who is also in my imagination) and the real world Richard Alpert's (baba ram das?) birthday too... Maybe if I take more medication, I will get off the island in my head... unfortunately I will have to go back for some reason unbeknownst to me at this time, my mind hasn't made up the 4th season yet.
I almost forgot... April 5th (my birthday) is also the day Lane Staley died according to the coroner's report.
So since this world is all in my imagination, my sub-concious is responsible for trying to kill of the Seattle grunge scene... and it is responsible for the flash forward. Mark my words... YOU GUYS AREN'T REAL!! NONE OF THIS IS REAL!! IT'S ALL AN ILLUSION CAUSED BY TOO MUCH LSD!!
I know this is going to sound crazy, but maybe they used a real newspaper as a prop in the airplane scene, and a fake clipping for the death notice?
I just noticed. Why is the image different?
Am I the only one that was hoping that the winning lottery numbers in the paper would be Hurley's #s? lol.
THAT would have been cool!
the two versions of the newspaper are different - it should be obvious by now. the one Jack was reading was a prop used for the show.
I agree. I dont think the producers/writers thought about the crazy Lost finatics that will spend hours and weeks trying to decipher every word on the page.
lol. If it was just a prop, then they obviously haven't realized just how crazy we all are.
*wink* Now that its a bad thing. :)
sorry, but does anyone really think that the paper was a real LA times from April 5 of 2007...i mean, they likely didn't just film this a month and a half before its release, did they?
jenny, you need to do some research on the way the show is produced, you might be surprised as to how close the production is to the airing.
What a they don't seem to put the obituaries on their website!
