Update: Thanks to several of you who email me and left comments (justherb99, Our Pool and others) we've now identified the person as Sir Richard Burton (1821 - 1890). Good work everyone.

Christian??? It looks like Charles DARWIN! That photo is a reproduction and looks very OLD!
geronimo jackson was definitly on the island at one point
http://www.nmm.ac.uk/server/show/conMediaFile.3815 It's not Darwin.
Alvar Hanso - all the way!
It's not Alvar Hanso, or Chirstian Shepard, or Cooper.
Michael Faraday, perhaps?

Lucky I just finished reading Mountains of the Moon (the basic story of his search for the source of the Nile) and was looking for pictures of him.
As someone already said, Geronimo Jackson was on the t-shirt of the hitch hiker Locke picked up that ended up being the cop...it was also mixed up in the records they played in the hatch
Ok, here's an interesting connection! Richard Burton is also the protagonist of Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld sci-fi book series. The basic concept is this: nearly all the people who have ever lived in the history of earth are all REINCARNATED on a planet that has a river circling the whole thing. Its designed to be a paradise...some think its heaven, others think its hell. Burton teams up with Mark Twain to try and figure out who's behind all of this. It's a GREAT series and does remind me a lot of the tone that LOST works so hard to create!
