Thats weird...is there a shot of the folder from the beginning to verify or disprove that this is the one that Locke burned?
French is one of the two official working languages (English is the other; 6 total official languages) of the United Nations, and is the traditional European language of diplomacy. Wiki states that every U.N. Secretary-General has spoken French until the current S-G, Ban-Ki Moon.
***French is also the official language of Interpol.
I think it is in french in order to show that Sawyer was con'ing all over the world, and was being watched by diferent intel-forces. In this case it's from some franco-country police. (if I'm not mistaken, Gendarmerie is the police)...
how did locke read it if it's all in French?
This is a french police official report ("procès-verbal" in french).
The "gendarmerie" is something typicaly french, as police in small towns and countryside is done by a millitary branch (acting as a sheriff/marshall in the US).
I'm french and I've seen before such document so I can translate it !
There is words I can't read but, I can read some interesting infos.
Uper left, the street where the crime or offense happen : "de la Croisette" so, it seems logical it was the "Boulevard de la croisette" in Cannes (city of the famous film festival) because there are very few streets in France with such name.
Next, there is the type of building where it happen, but it's not readable at all ( "conciXXXXX").
Just under this box there is the kind of people involved : "Hommes" (men), not seen in the picture, "Femmes" (women) only the end of the word, and "enfants" (childrens). So there is no childrens involved...
Other infos are meaningless, until the next part under:
There is an X in a small box next a "oui" (yes): the beginning is cut from the frame on the left but it's "préjudice corporel" in the real paper. That mean someone been hurt physicaly.
Down under, it's where the crime/offense is described by words, but nothing with some sense can be read ;"en faisant xxxx pour le " (doing xxxx in way to)...
So we just learn that Sawyer has done some bad things in France and the "côte d'Azur", hurting someone, witch is a lot in a single frame ;)
Maybe a new connection with Rousseau/Montand or Shannon (who spend some time in the south of France) or even Saïd ...
I wonder if he was moved to Canada as a child. Our official languages are french and english.
A better grab would help, there's a date in the top right corner but it's not readable.
One word that I can see is Elementaire, which translates to Elementary (school?).
It looks like the boxes beside "non" and "oui" are both marked for whatever question is under the "Femmes"/Enfants" line.
815 took off from Australia, many of the island in this part of the world are former French colonies. So this report could have come from almost anywhere.
"de P.V." means "the official statement conserning."
how about a connection with Rousseau? She was originally part of a French team of scientists: maybe there's a french organization behind the Others.
It wouldn't surprise me, remember he told Jack that he's been to Pukhet?(sp)
is it worth pointing out that "children" hasn't been checked? either the 'investigators' aren't aware of his daughter, or she never existed.
In that paper, they are talking about a specific crime that he commited, not about his entire life.
When Locke burns the folder at the beginning of the episode, you can see some printing on it. Can we have a screen capture please?
Perhaps Rousseau collects the evidence. She seemed quite familiar with Locke when she entered Black Rock, as if she had been revealed to him as an "other." I suspect she works for Ben.
I do, however, wonder how Locke read it.
French is used in a lot of african countries.
Maybe this piece of paper is only a part of the file. The other papers, which would be the ones Locke read, were in english.
Thank you lily..that was what I was going to say. John said the file had a lot of things in it. You can only see one page so why assume it is all in French. And to jan ...Rousseau would know Locke because she was part of the party that went to "resuce" Jack from the others although she took off on her own once they got to the "camp".
It's highly doubtful this is from Québec. If it were, there would be other words after "Gendarmerie" since it's the "Gendarmerie royale du Canada" and not just "Gendarmerie" and the other police forces are not known as "Gendarmerie" here but mostly "Police" ou "Corps policier municipal".
I agree with the person who talked about this crime occurring in Cannes.
Maybe the rest of the file is in English and only that page is in French as it wasn't available in any other languages. And who knows, maybe there were police reports in other languages in Sawyer's file.
The orignal character of Sawyer was supposed to be a slick, European based con-man according to Season 1 bonus commentary. There was probably a backstory there that was adapted to Holloway's southern sensibility.
Someone already wrote it's not from Québec, nor Some French colony near Australia.
Its from france 'cause the street where the crime was done is located in Cannes or so.
also there's nothing that made us believe the whole file is in french. .I think there could be notes from anywhere Sawyer had been, so there would be notes in several languages.
What difference makes if the file Locke burns is the same as the one Richard gave him?
I don't think he every claimed to have been to Phuket; he was just defending himself that just because he's a hillbilly, doesn't mean he's an idiot (proved by knowing that Phuket is in Thailand). He's obviously well-read, and pretty well-informed.
I personally like the idea of it being the international language, particularly that of Interpol. The Others seem to have an uncanny, intimate knowledge of the details of everyone's seemingly mundane lives. I wouldn't be surprised if they had these kind of connections.
I think the information the others have comes from the same place Naomi came from, remember all the languages she spoke.
Interpol is in France, perhaps this file is from their database?
The guy (forgot his name) that Ben asked to pull the files up is French. Perhaps he is just more comfortable doing things in his own language.
Nobody got this yet? As a former Military Man, this looks like a personnel or a medical record. The reason it's in French? He was most likely in the French Foreign Legion. This is where bad boys go to get a new identitiy/name/life. Where do Legion guys go to vacation? Thailand. (Phuket)
lOcke was obviously x-french military. why else would he use Rousseau to guard the sub while he planted the explosives?
